Terms of Service
Last updated: 4 August 2026
These terms are provided by To Self. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. Please also read our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your data.
The service
to-self is a private, encrypted note-taking app. A free account gives you unlimited local use and unlimited notes, notebooks, and attachments, with one device kept in sync and 100 MB of synced attachment storage. The optional Pro subscription keeps all of your devices in sync at once and raises synced attachment storage to 10 GB — see our pricing page for current details.
Your account
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. Do not share your account with others. You must be at least 13 years old to use the service.
Subscription (Pro plan)
Pro is billed by Stripe, acting as merchant of record, at US$5/month or US$40/year as shown on our pricing page. Prices shown include any applicable tax (VAT where it applies); Stripe converts the charge to your local currency where supported, so the amount you’re billed may show differently on your statement while representing the same underlying price. Subscriptions bill in advance and automatically renew at the end of each billing period until cancelled.
You can start a one-time 60-day free Pro trial from within the app. No payment details are required, the trial doesn’t automatically convert into a paid subscription, and when it ends your account returns to the Free tier unless you choose to subscribe. There’s one trial per account.
You can cancel anytime from the account page on our website, which opens Stripe’s billing portal, or by emailing contact@toself.me. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep Pro access until the end of the billing period you already paid for, then your account reverts to the Free tier. If you’re storing more than the Free tier’s synced attachment storage limit when you downgrade, we don’t delete anything — you just won’t be able to sync new attachments until you’re back under the limit. We don’t offer refunds for the unused portion of a billing period outside the statutory right below.
If you’re in the UK or EU, you have the right to cancel within 14 days of first subscribing to Pro for a full refund. This one-time right applies to your initial purchase, not to each renewal.
If we change the price of a subscription, we’ll email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. The new price applies from your next renewal, and you can cancel before then if you don’t want to continue.
Your content
Your notes belong to you. We claim no ownership over anything you write. Because your content is encrypted on your device before being stored, we cannot access it.
Feedback
If you send us feedback, suggestions, or ideas about the service — whether through the in-app form, by email, or otherwise — you grant us the right to use them freely to operate and improve To Self, with no obligation to you and no compensation. Please don’t include confidential information in your feedback, and don’t submit anything that is unlawful, abusive, or infringes someone else’s rights.
Acceptable use
You may not use to-self to:
- Store or distribute illegal content
- Attempt to access or interfere with another user’s data
- Reverse engineer or attempt to circumvent the service’s security
- Use the service in any way that could damage or overburden our infrastructure
Service availability
We aim to keep the service available and reliable but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We reserve the right to suspend or discontinue the service at any time.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss or damage arising from your use of the service.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page when we do. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, except where mandatory local consumer protection laws in your country of residence provide you with stronger rights — in which case those rights are unaffected.
